Chief Learning Officer & Chief Academic Officer, Math Learning Center

OVERVIEW

The Math Learning Center is a non-profit organization serving the education community. Their mission is to inspire and enable students to discover and develop their mathematical confidence and ability. The organization’s innovative and standards-based products and services are used by educators for all grade levels. The organization grew out of a project funded by the National Science Foundation to improve the teaching of mathematics in the late 1970s. By the mid-1980s it became clear there was a demand for the organization’s products and services. Since then the organization has continued to grow and expand.


CHALLENGE

The founder of The Math Learning Center was more than an expert. He was a genius in the creation and innovation of the products and services. But he was also gifted at transferring that knowledge through curriculum and to educators. He was clearly irreplaceable. To fill his intellectual shoes, we determined that we needed to find two leaders: a Chief Learning Officer and a Chief Academic Officer. The candidate for the Chief Learning Officer position would oversee the continued innovation and delivery of the products and services. The candidate for the Chief Academic Officer position would be responsible for providing thought leadership and oversight of the quality of the organization’s offerings by collaborating closely with the education team.


RESULT

Our approach led to the right solution that catapulted the growth of the organization to more than triple its size. At the time of the hires, the organization sold mainly to West Coast customers. Now products and services are sold throughout the country and even in some international locations. With these strategic hires, the organization is able to continually create new modules and updates. As the organization forges ahead, their mission of making mathematics approachable for students from all walks of life is becoming a reality.
